Portrait of Laurence Belzile by Elisa Bonnafous

The Artist

Laurence Belzile is a professional artist from Québec whose work explores how forms, colors, and sensory perceptions can instinctively translate space, memory, and the body.

Through an abstract gestural approach, her paintings unfold as sensitive fields of movement and presence. Layers of color, spontaneous marks, and subtle tensions between shapes create compositions that feel both poetic and deeply personal. Her work invites the viewer to experience painting not only visually, but physically, like an atmosphere that resonates with memory and emotion.

The Starting Point : Sans équivoque

For this first moodboard of Layers to Compose, I chose to work from the painting Sans Équivoque.

The piece carries a theatrical, almost dramatic presence. Strong chiaroscuro contrasts create depth and intensity, while the vibrant dialogue between pale blue and terracotta, set against a deep blue background, immediately draws the eye.

There is also something playful in Belzile’s gestural language. The marks feel spontaneous and alive, subtly suggesting the idea of pattern, like an invitation to experiment with motifs, but always with restraint.

Though modest in scale, the painting possesses a powerful compositional balance. From this tension between softness and contrast emerged the idea for an enveloping bedroom: a space that feels intimate, textured, and quietly dramatic.

The interior imagined here embraces eclecticism. Vintage furniture dialogues with more contemporary pieces, allowing time periods and materials to coexist naturally. Rich textures such as velvet, dark wood, hand-knotted textiles and marble bring warmth and depth, while carefully chosen accents of color echo the vibrancy of the painting.

Color Palette — Layers of inspiration

Extracted from the painting, the palette balances depth, warmth, and vibrancy:

  • Deep blue — grounding and dramatic
  • Pale blue — cool and airy
  • Deep burgundy and terracotta — warmth and earthiness
  • White accents — touches of light and breath

This combination allows the interior to feel dramatic yet intimate, playful yet harmonious.

Design Notes

On Material Contrast

This moodboard translates the painting into a possible interior. The choices celebrate layers, personal touches, and a dialogue between materials, textures, and colors. There is room to evolve over time, just like the artwork that inspired it.

A dark wood floor anchors the space, while the walls and ceilings are envisioned in a deep navy blue, echoing the background of the painting and enveloping the room. A handwoven rug introduces softness and texture.

The palette unfolds through carefully selected elements: a terracotta pendant light, a vibrant red vintage trunk, deep red velvet curtains, and a burgundy table lamp. Cushions pick up the tones of the artwork, creating subtle connections throughout the composition.

The dialogue between vintage pieces and contemporary elements allows the space to feel lived-in, evolving, and alive, much like the artwork that inspired it.

On Treasures from the Past

Don’t hesitate to shop vintage.

Older furniture, lighting, and rugs carry a patina and a story that new pieces rarely match. Their materials and craftsmanship are often of a quality that’s hard to find today, unless you venture into the very high end.

Vintage pieces also introduce a sense of time into an interior, like small traces of life that make a space feel inhabited and authentic.

On Playful Color Pairings

Sometimes, it only takes a few thoughtful accents to transform a room. Consider introducing color in unexpected ways:

  • Painting the inside of a cabinet in a complementary tone ;
  • Replacing white sheets with vibrant ones that peek subtly beneath a bedspread ;
  • Adding one or two carefully chosen cushions ;
  • Placing a rug to bring warmth and depth.

Even small gestures can bring new life to a space. Don’t hesitate to be bold — paint your moldings, or even your ceilings.

Like a painting, an interior is never truly finished.
It evolves slowly, one discovery, one layer at a time.
